Goldendoodles are a combination of a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. They were originally bred in the standard size with the intent of creating a family dog that was allergy-friendly, but today are bred in sizes from micro teacup to standard, ranging from about 5 pounds to 75 pounds!
Goldendoodles are smart, lovable, very trainable, family dogs. They are very athletic, and great with other animals and children. Overall, they are amiable and easy-going.
Over the years, the breed became very popular, and breeders began experimenting with sizes, generations, and color patterns to fill the growing demands of prospective customers. This allowed breeders to selectively breed for temperament, coat, size, intelligence, aesthetics and quality.
At Taylor Made Puppies, we specialize in breeding red miniature and teacup Goldendoodle puppies that are the best of the best. They are medium energy with a non-shedding, allergy-friendly, easy-to-manage coat, and are very clever, social, and happy puppies who aim to please.
They love to be part of the family and are lively when free to romp and play, but also have a wonderfully quiet, calm demeanor when it's time to chill.
Training is key to having a wonderful pet, and with a dog of this intelligence level, it is especially important. Consistent, positive training methods will quickly lead to a wonderful lifetime companion.
The Goldendoodle's ancestry along both parents' lines are water dogs and hunters, so the Goldendoodle naturally loves the water and retrieving.
Everyone knows that Golden Retrievers were bred for hunting and retrieving and love the water, but what most people don't know is that Standard Poodles were also water dogs used for retrieving and their conformation and the texture and coats to this day reflect the purposes for which they were bred.
The curls were not a "fashion statement," they had a real purpose - to repel water allowing the Poodle to tread water quicker and dry faster.
Sizes - Typical adult weight can range between 5 - 75 pounds, being classified as teacup, miniature, medium, or standard. This is dependent on the size of the parent dogs, typically the Poodle, which can range from a Toy, Miniature, Moyen or Standard. Teacup Goldendoodles are typically 5-15 pounds, Mini Goldendoodles are 15-30 pounds, Medium 30-45, and Standards are from 45-75 pounds, with some as large as 95!
Activity Level - These dogs have a moderate activity level. They do well with plenty of exercise but are also very happy to chill on the couch with you.
Colors - F1 Goldendoodles can only be solid colors in black, cream, apricot and red. Later generations, such as F1B, F1BB, and Multi-gens can have more interesting colors such as tri-color, parti (bi-color), sables, abstract (small amount of white) and/or phantom, dependent on the color traits of the parents. Merle is a pattern rather than a color. Merle appears as patches of light and dark colors mixed. The merle pattern can appear on any of the generations mentioned here.
Generations - There are F1, F1b, F2, F2b and multi-gen Goldendoodles. The F1 generation is achieved by breeding a Golden Retriever and a Poodle. It is thought to be the best in terms of health benefits because mixing two completely different breeds minimizes the hereditary diseases of both breeds in the puppies and is also the most stable for coat type.
The F1B Generation is the crossing of an F1 Goldendoodle with a Poodle, and is thought to be better for allergies because of the higher concentration of Poodle. Half of the F1B generation puppies will be curly and the other half will be wavy like the F1, so it is important to know which type you're getting if you need to worry about allergies.
Grooming Requirements - Like all Doodles, Goldendoodles will require grooming every 2-3 months, depending on the curl of their coat. Curlier puppies in the F1B generation will require grooming about every 2 months, while wavy puppies of the F1 and F1B generations can usually go about 3 months between groomings.
